John W. Vitale, President & CEO
Mr. Vitale joined AVITAS in 1993. Prior to his appointment as President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Vitale served as Vice President - Asset Valuation and AVITAS’s Chief Appraiser. He remains active in performing asset management advisory services, aircraft valuations, special studies, forecasts, and providing expert testimony. Mr. Vitale has overseen the valuation of thousands of aircraft and has testified on numerous occasions as an expert witness regarding aircraft values, appraisals and transactions.
Mr. Vitale has been featured as a speaker at numerous industry conferences and seminars hosted by such entities as the International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading (ISTAT), the Institute for International Research (IIR), Euromoney, JP Morgan Chase, UBS, Equipment Leasing and Finance Association, Commercial Aviation Report, AirCargo Management Group and Aviation Industry Conferences.
He came to AVITAS from the Aircraft Finance Group of McDonnell Douglas Finance Corporation (MDFC), where his responsibilities included market valuations and residual value forecasts for commercial turboprop and jet transport aircraft and related equipment, as well as risk analysis and asset management.
Prior to joining MDFC, Mr. Vitale was involved in numerous new aircraft sales campaigns at Douglas Aircraft Company’s Commercial Marketing department. While at Douglas, he also performed forecasts and economic analyses for airline customers in the Western Hemisphere, including aircraft profitability analyses, route feasibility studies, operating cost and revenue forecasting, macro and micro passenger and cargo traffic forecasting, fleet plans, and special studies on immigration patterns, market dispersion, import/export patterns and computer reservation systems.
Mr. Vitale holds a BS in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance from California State University, Long Beach, serves as President, on the Board of Directors of the International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading (ISTAT), the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association’s Aviation Committee and is an ISTAT Certified Appraiser.
Adam M. Pilarski, Ph.D., Senior Vice President
Dr. Pilarski joined AVITAS in 1997 after seventeen years as an economist with Douglas Aircraft Company to oversee AVITAS’s valuation and consulting services. He is also responsible for supporting customers with studies including traffic forecasts, economic forecasts, statistical analyses, strategic planning and airline industry issues.
His last position at Douglas Aircraft Company was Chief Economist and Director of Strategic Planning with responsibility for all economic analyses performed for the company both in house and through vendors. Dr. Pilarski was the publisher and editor of the annual “Outlook” publications.
Prior to joining Douglas, Dr. Pilarski worked as Assistant Professor of Economics and Statistics at California State University, Los Angeles. In addition to his work at McDonnell Douglas, he was an Adjunct Professor at the Anderson Graduate School of Management at the University of California at Los Angeles, at the University of California at Irvine, and at California State University at Long Beach.
Dr. Pilarski is a prolific writer and has written over 130 articles in professional and academic publications. He has been published in, among others, The Review of Economics and Statistics, Economic Inquiry, American Journal of Sociology, African Air Transport, China Business Review, Air Finance Journal, Industrial Relations and Industrial and Labor Relations Review. He has been a keynote speaker at many industry, airline, and academic conferences and functions. Dr Pilarski is the author of a book “Why Can’t We Make Money in Aviation?” published by Ashgate in 2007.
Dr. Pilarski has been elected Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. He is also a member of the board of directors of Sage Electronics & Technology Inc., a manufacturer of advanced industrial controls and portable power charging systems.
Dr. Pilarski holds a BA in Economics and an MA in Development from Tel Aviv University, Israel, and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana. He attended primary school in Germany and attended high school and some college in Poland. He is happily married and the proud father of six wonderful children.
Douglas B. Kelly, Senior Vice President - Asset Valuation
Mr. Kelly joined AVITAS in March 1997 bringing fourteen years of aviation experience. He came from Federal Express where he was the company's Fleet Planning Advisor and responsible for fleet plan development, aircraft technical and value expertise, analytical modeling support for fleet plans, and the evaluation of aircraft acquisitions and proposals. Prior to joining Federal Express, Mr. Kelly worked at Douglas Aircraft Company as an Airline Planning Specialist where he was responsible for financial and market analysis in support of international sales, development of sales strategies and tactics, and the formulation of new entrant business plans. Mr. Kelly holds a BA from The University of California, Santa Barbara and an MBA from The Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management.
Michael J. Miller , Vice President - Valuation and Consulting
Mr. Michael Miller rejoined AVITAS in 2010 as Senior Director of Valuation and Consulting.. He is an aviation industry veteran with 35 years of aviation experience having worked at virtually all levels of aviation including, airlines, aerospace manufacturing, consulting, and aircraft leasing. His areas of expertise are in analysis, research, aircraft fleet planning, strategy, aircraft values and economics, and market and risk assessment.
Mr. Miller received his start at Delta Air Lines working for the airline in various capacities over an 18 year period. From there, he moved to a small start-up airline with operations out of Washington Dulles International Airport managing the airline's planning and yield management departments. From there, he moved to the aerospace manufacturing business working for British Aerospace for a short period of time before going into aviation consulting at Ernst & Young. He has also worked for Saab Aircraft of America as head of aircraft fleet planning and was with AVITAS as Director of Consulting in 1998/1999. He has also been with Fairchild Dornier, a manufacturer of regional aircraft where he headed their market planning and analysis group.
Most recently, Mr. Miller was with Rolls-Royce North America in their corporate and regional aircraft/engine business unit as Director of Market Planning and Analysis. Over the last three years, he was head of strategy and market assessment at Republic Financial Corporation, an investment company which had an aircraft portfolio comprised of 24 aircraft, valued at over $600M.
Mr. Miller is a current member of the International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading. Mr. Miller was in the U.S. Air Force where he served as an aircraft mechanic and he has a B.S. degree from George Mason University in Business Administration with a concentration in decision science.
Bruce D. Burnett , Senior Vice President - Technical Services
Bruce Burnett joined AVITAS, Inc as Vice President – Technical Services in November 2012 after 6 years with Airbus / EADS. With over 32 years of experience in the commercial aviation industry, Bruce has held positions in Maintenance, Flight Ops, Finance, and Customer Services with two major aircraft manufacturers and three major airlines.
Prior to joining AVITAS, Bruce held positions with Airbus Americas in the Procurement / Global Sourcing department as Head of Commercial Procurement. In this position, Bruce took the lead role in managing projects which included re-engineering the procurement process, developing procurement marketing and country sourcing strategies, and supporting Airbus sales campaigns
Prior to joining the Procurement organization, Bruce spent one year on a European assignment where he worked in the Customer Services Business Strategy department in Toulouse. In this role, Bruce was responsible for leading an improvement project in the Spares Supply Chain organization in France and Germany.
Before leaving for Europe, Bruce worked in Airbus North America Customer Services, as a Customer Support Director since he joined Airbus in May of 2006. In this role, Bruce was responsible for the support of several major airlines operating in the United States. This support position involved the liaison role between Airbus and the airline operators, which included technical coordination on significant issues, entry into service assistance, reliability monitoring, upgrade marketing, sales support, contract negotiations, and customer relations.
Bruce came to Airbus from a senior management position with US Airways (formerly America West Airlines) in Phoenix. He left US Airways after more than 10 years in numerous organizations including Finance, Flight Operations and Technical Services. His last position was Director of Engineering, where he also managed the aircraft acquisition and return group.
Prior to his tenure at US Airways, Bruce held a management position at United Airlines in the Technical Services department for 5 years. He was responsible for the operational engineering technical concerns for several fleet types as well as the technical liaison to the Flight Operations departments. Before that, Bruce worked in the Customer Services division of Boeing Commercial Aircraft Group for more than 10 years. During that time, Bruce developed operations manuals, taught classes and supported several airlines with their technical queries.
Bruce graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a Bachelors’ Degree in Aeronautical Science and received another Bachelors’ Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Seattle University. Bruce is a pilot with an Airline Transport Pilots License and has several thousand hours of flying time in both general aviation and Airbus aircraft. Bruce and his wife, Catherine, live in Leesburg, VA.
Timothy E. Scott , Vice President - Technical Services
Mr. Scott joined AVITAS in January 2013 with twenty-two years in commercial aviation. He supports AVITAS’s Technical department as we perform inspections of on-lease, redelivery, and prepurchase aircraft and maintenance records, and manages other projects requiring specialized technical expertise, aircraft management, contract negotiation, or project management skills. He joined AVITAS after five years at AerCap as Vice President Technical – The Americas where he negotiated technical contracts, transitioned aircraft to and from aircraft lessees, and managed aircraft and engines on lease to commercial airlines in the region. Prior to AerCap, he was at Delta Air Lines for seventeen years in roles throughout Aircraft Engineering, Aircraft Contracts, and Aircraft Acquisition & Sales. Mr. Scott holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Oklahoma State University and an MBA in Finance from Georgia State University.
Rikard de Jounge, Vice President - Asset Valuation
Mr. de Jounge joined AVITAS in 2005 and is responsible for the development and maintenance of AVITAS’s aircraft and engine valuation models. He is also actively engaged in day-to-day valuations, appraisals and modeling of values and market dynamics for all types of commercial aircraft and engines including the analysis of aircraft performance and operating costs; forecasting of maintenance cash flows and lease evaluations from a financial and technical perspective.
Mr. de Jounge began his career with Douglas Aircraft, with positions in Aero Certification, Flight Test and Customer Engineering. He also worked for Boeing Commercial Aircraft in Customer Engineering. Prior to joining AVITAS, Mr. de Jounge was the President for a family owned furniture wholesale importer.
Mr. de Jounge is a graduate from Kungliga Tekniska Hogskolan (KTH) Stockholm Sweden with a MS in Aeronautical Engineering and he is an International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading (ISTAT) certified appraiser.
Stephen R. Jarvis, Managing Director, AVITAS Europe
Mr. Jarvis joined AVITAS in 1998 to assume responsibility for all European operations for AVITAS. He brings sixteen years experience in the air transportation industry, most recently with Air 2000 Ltd., the UK's second largest leisure airline, where he headed up Corporate Planning activities. His specialties included fleet planning, aircraft acquisition/disposal programs with lessors and business development. Prior to Air 2000, Mr. Jarvis served in the Technical Sales department of British Aerospace's BAe 146 Marketing team covering accounts ranging from Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe to the United Kingdom. He holds an MSc in Air Transport Management from Cranfield College of Aeronautics and a BSc in Civil Engineering.
